- Assess the candidate’s competency. Competency is the gatekeeper of employee selection. As a business, you need an employee who has the proper education, experience, and skills for the role. This is the most important and easiest selection factor.
- Assess the candidate’s capability. An employee who completes assigned tasks is good, but one who goes above and beyond is better. A candidate who shows strong work effort and creativity is an employee who wants to grow and accept greater responsibility. An employee who only performs the bare minimum shouldn’t qualify.
- Assess the candidate’s compatibility. Employees may need a degree and certain skills to competently complete job duties; however, they are not all that matters. Consider temperament, personality, and character. Find out how a candidate reacts to difficult situations, failures, and trials. Assess how a candidate behaves when no one is watching. Select an employee who can get along with others, submits to the authority of bosses, and values integrity.
- Assess the candidate’s commitment. Select a long-term employee, not a temporary one. While you may need to fill the vacant role in your business as soon as possible, exercise patience; don’t select a temporary candidate. Review the candidate’s past work history and notice how long he or she stayed at each job. Does the candidate hop from one job to the next, or is there a long-term job commitment history?

Hiring the wrong employee hurts your productivity, wastes money, and diminishes employee morale; hiring the right person results in accomplished company goals, efficiency, and a positive work culture.
